Am I registered with Skate Canada?

All members who participate in a Skate Canada Club program must be a registered member of Skate Canada. Skate Canada provides a membership card along with a collector's card each year to each of its registered skaters. Please ask your club President for your membership card if you have not already received it.

What is my Skate Canada registration number?

Your Skate Canada registration number is a unique number issued to each Skate Canada member. This number must be provided each year to your home club at registration time. Your Skate Canada registration number should never change even if your skating activities change.

The skating season has already begun. Is it too late to enroll?

No not at all. You can start at any moment during the season. Unless specified, we accept registrations on an on-going basis.

I am a beginner. Am I at a disadvantage in comparison to other skaters who started earlier in the season?

No. We offer the CanSkate program, which is the Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program for beginners of all ages that teaches fundamental movements and basic skills. The CanSkate program is structured in a grid-format, consisting of the development of six fundamental movements: GO forward, GO backwards, STOP, TURN, SPIN and JUMP organized in six stages of learning, with an optional 7th level for skaters wishing to progress into figure skating. The skills are arranged in progressions, from very simple to the more complex. Each stage has a primary focus. Once the skills on each stage are mastered and tested, the skater can move up to the next level.

Participants are taught in a group lesson format by a certified professional coach with program assistants (club' skaters). Because of the group lesson format, you can come and join us at any time during the season.

Are the membership fees the same if I enroll at mid-season?

No. As registrations are accepted on an on-going basis, fees are pro-rated. However, the sooner you register, the better it is because fees start falling only in November. You can download the season's pro-rated fees chart. If you have any questions about membership fees, ask our treasurer, Jean-Guy Deschênes. He can give you informaiton about rebate conditions offered to club's regular members. For example, if you enroll in more than one skating session, you can get a rebate on the second session registration fee.

I am a man looking for a place to learn skating but I'm not really into figure skating. Does you club provide an instructional program for improving skating skills?

The Club provides instructional programs for adult skaters of all ages, abilities, and interests. CanSkate is Canada's only national learn-to-skate program. It was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive and sequential manner. Skaters progress at their own rate. The objectives of this program include learning proper techniques for forward skating, backward skating, stopping, turning, jumping and spinning through a sequence of seven progressing stages.

I have never skated before. What class should I enroll in?

It is suggested that all beginners come at the Saturday morning session (9 AM-10 AM) even if they have skated a little before. This class is an entry level class and it is suggested that all beginning skaters start with this class. This includes skaters who have not skated before and those who have had some skating experience but no formal training. Skaters will be placed in the group that benefits them the most (grouping by ability). Skaters are evaluated and tested regularly so they can move up to another group during the skating season.

I am a former skater. I passed skating tests but I don't remember which level I stopped. How do I check my tests? Do I have to take all the tests over again?

Skate Canada has a test record of all current and former test skaters. The location of your test record will vary depending on the last time you were registered with Skate Canada and took a test. Currently Skate Canada has a record of all skaters who have taken tests since approximately 1991. If your skating tests were prior to 1991, these records are kept on a microfilm file. The more information you provide the easier it is to research your record. Please contact Skate Canada's Member Services Department to obtain a copy of the request form.
Please note that the highest test level in each discipline is indicated on the right hand side of the Skate Canada membership card. If you know your Skate Canada registration number, it will be easy to find out your test files.
If you were in the CanSkate program and did not take any skating test when you stopped skating then we suggest to start in the CanSkate program.
